CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAM FOR WOMEN AND YOUTH IN SANTCHOU: Learn Skills That Turn Soil Into Income
“Sir, I farm all year but my soil is getting tired.” “Brother, I want to farm, but chemicals are too expensive and they make me sick.”
If these words sound familiar in Santchou, you are not alone. Many women and youths in Menoua Division work hard on the farm, yet harvest less each season. Soil is weak. Produce spoils fast. Money from the market does not match the sweat.
What if the problem is not your hands, but your skills? That is exactly why STONEFARMS is coming to Santchou.
INTRODUCTION : What This Article Will Teach You
- The 3 biggest challenges killing farm profit for women and youth in Santchou
- 4 practical skills you will learn in 2 days to fix them
- How STONEFARMS will train you, and what we expect from you
Read this like advice from a farmer friend. No big grammar. Only things you can use tomorrow on your farm.
1. Why Santchou Women and Youth Need New Skills Now
Santchou soil is blessed. But 3 things are draining our profit:
- Post-harvest losses: You harvest 10 baskets of tomatoes, but 3 baskets spoil before reaching market. That is money thrown away.
- Tired soils from chemical fertilizers: Too much chemical fertilizer makes soil hard and sick over time. It also affects our health when we eat the crops.
- Lack of low-cost solutions: Many youths want to farm, but they think you must buy expensive inputs to succeed.
The Capacity Building Program for Rural Women and Youth on 3rd – 4th July 2026 at CBC Santchou was designed to solve these exact problems. Organized by STONEFARMS, this 2-day training is practical, hands-on, and made for people who work with their hands.
2.1: How To Stop Post-Harvest Losses
You already grow the food. Now let’s learn how to keep it.
We will show you simple methods to manage post-harvest losses. For roots and tubers like potatoes and cocoyam, you will learn curing and proper storage using local materials. For vegetables, you will learn grading and use of crates instead of bags to reduce damage.
Local example: Mama Beatrice from Santchou market used to lose 40% of her carrots to rot. After learning grading and diffused light storage, she now sells her produce over 2 weeks instead of 2 days. Her income increased because she sells when price is high, not when crop is about to spoil.
2.2: Understand Chemical Fertilizers and Protect Your Health
Chemicals can help crops, but excessive use has a cost. It makes soil acidic and weak. It can also affect human health when we don’t use it safely.
In this program, trainers will explain the effects of excessive use of chemical fertilizers on soil and human health in simple language. You will learn signs of soil fatigue and safe handling practices. Knowledge is protection for you and your family.
2.3: Make and Use Organic Liquid Fertilizer With Local Waste
Your farm waste is money waiting to happen. Banana peels, cow dung, poultry droppings can become liquid fertilizer.
Step by step production and use of organic liquid fertilizer. You will mix, ferment, and apply it on our demo plots at CBC Santchou. This fertilizer is cheap, improves soil life, and gives healthy crops without burning your soil.
Local example: A youth group in Fossong Ellelem started making organic liquid fertilizer after our last training. They cut their fertilizer cost by 60% and their pepper plants are greener. They now sell extra fertilizer to neighbors.
2.4: Be a Responsible Farmer and Community Trainer
Farming is not only about planting. It is about responsibility.
Participant Responsibilities you must know: STONEFARMS asks every participant to commit to 8 simple things:
- Active participation in all sessions and practical demonstrations
- Punctual attendance throughout 3rd – 4th July 2026
- Respectful conduct toward trainers and fellow participants
- Commitment to learn and apply the knowledge at home
- Environmental responsibility and promotion of sustainable practices
- Follow all safety instructions during practical activities
- Share what you learn with family, farmer groups, and your community
- Handle all training materials and equipment with care
When you learn, teach others. That is how Santchou grows stronger together. STONEFARMS means Sustainable Organization of Transformer’s Farmers Network. We are “transformers” because we transform people first, then farms.
Our responsibilities to you:
- We will provide qualified trainers and facilitators who speak your language
- We will provide training materials and demonstration resources for hands-on practice
- We will deliver both theory and practical sessions on real crops
- We will ensure a conducive learning environment at CBC Santchou
- We will issue certificates of participation where applicable so you can show banks and groups what you learned
We don’t just talk. We practice with you on the farm, then you practice at home.
