CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAM FOR WOMEN AND YOUTH IN SANTCHOU: Learn Skills That Turn Soil Into Income

Sir, I farm all year but my soil is getting tired.” “Brother, I want to farm, but chemicals are too expensive and they make me sick.

If these words sound familiar in Santchou, you are not alone. Many women and youths in Menoua Division work hard on the farm, yet harvest less each season. Soil is weak. Produce spoils fast. Money from the market does not match the sweat.

What if the problem is not your hands, but your skills? That is exactly why STONEFARMS is coming to Santchou.

INTRODUCTION : What This Article Will Teach You

    1. The 3 biggest challenges killing farm profit for women and youth in Santchou
    2. 4 practical skills you will learn in 2 days to fix them
    3. How STONEFARMS will train you, and what we expect from you

Read this like advice from a farmer friend. No big grammar. Only things you can use tomorrow on your farm.

    1. Why Santchou Women and Youth Need New Skills Now

Santchou soil is blessed. But 3 things are draining our profit:

    • Post-harvest losses: You harvest 10 baskets of tomatoes, but 3 baskets spoil before reaching market. That is money thrown away.
    • Tired soils from chemical fertilizers: Too much chemical fertilizer makes soil hard and sick over time. It also affects our health when we eat the crops.
    • Lack of low-cost solutions: Many youths want to farm, but they think you must buy expensive inputs to succeed.

The Capacity Building Program for Rural Women and Youth on 3rd – 4th July 2026 at CBC Santchou was designed to solve these exact problems. Organized by STONEFARMS, this 2-day training is practical, hands-on, and made for people who work with their hands.

2.1: How To Stop Post-Harvest Losses

You already grow the food. Now let’s learn how to keep it.

We will show you simple methods to manage post-harvest losses. For roots and tubers like potatoes and cocoyam, you will learn curing and proper storage using local materials. For vegetables, you will learn grading and use of crates instead of bags to reduce damage.

Local example: Mama Beatrice from Santchou market used to lose 40% of her carrots to rot. After learning grading and diffused light storage, she now sells her produce over 2 weeks instead of 2 days. Her income increased because she sells when price is high, not when crop is about to spoil.

2.2: Understand Chemical Fertilizers and Protect Your Health

Chemicals can help crops, but excessive use has a cost. It makes soil acidic and weak. It can also affect human health when we don’t use it safely.

In this program, trainers will explain the effects of excessive use of chemical fertilizers on soil and human health in simple language. You will learn signs of soil fatigue and safe handling practices. Knowledge is protection for you and your family.

2.3: Make and Use Organic Liquid Fertilizer With Local Waste

Your farm waste is money waiting to happen. Banana peels, cow dung, poultry droppings can become liquid fertilizer.

Step by step production and use of organic liquid fertilizer. You will mix, ferment, and apply it on our demo plots at CBC Santchou. This fertilizer is cheap, improves soil life, and gives healthy crops without burning your soil.

Local example: A youth group in Fossong Ellelem started making organic liquid fertilizer after our last training. They cut their fertilizer cost by 60% and their pepper plants are greener. They now sell extra fertilizer to neighbors.

2.4: Be a Responsible Farmer and Community Trainer

Farming is not only about planting. It is about responsibility.

Participant Responsibilities you must know: STONEFARMS asks every participant to commit to 8 simple things:

    • Active participation in all sessions and practical demonstrations
    • Punctual attendance throughout 3rd – 4th July 2026
    • Respectful conduct toward trainers and fellow participants
    • Commitment to learn and apply the knowledge at home
    • Environmental responsibility and promotion of sustainable practices
    • Follow all safety instructions during practical activities
    • Share what you learn with family, farmer groups, and your community
    • Handle all training materials and equipment with care

When you learn, teach others. That is how Santchou grows stronger together. STONEFARMS means Sustainable Organization of Transformer’s Farmers Network. We are “transformers” because we transform people first, then farms.

    Our responsibilities to you:

    • We will provide qualified trainers and facilitators who speak your language
    • We will provide training materials and demonstration resources for hands-on practice
    • We will deliver both theory and practical sessions on real crops
    • We will ensure a conducive learning environment at CBC Santchou
    • We will issue certificates of participation where applicable so you can show banks and groups what you learned

We don’t just talk. We practice with you on the farm, then you practice at home.

    Host Community + Your Role

The host community in Santchou will help by mobilizing participants, providing a suitable venue, and supporting coordination with local leaders. Your role is to come ready to learn, ask questions, and take the knowledge back to your farm and community.

Your Turn: Register and Secure Your Spot

Women and youths of Santchou, the soil is ready. The training is ready. The only thing missing is you. Capacity Building Program Details:

    Date: 3rd – 4th July 2026

  • 25-Hectare Climate-Smart Cassava Seed Production Hub in Foulong

25-Hectare Climate-Smart Cassava Seed Production Hub in Foulong

STONEFARMS Launches 25-Hectare Climate-Smart Cassava Seed Production Hub in Foulong: The First Step Toward a 500-Hectare Rural Transformation Platform

In the fertile agricultural landscape of Foulong Village, located in Foumbot Subdivision of Cameroon’s West Region, a transformative initiative is taking shape. Led by STONEFARMS in strategic collaboration with WEFA SARL and Nature Guide, the Foulong Climate-Smart Cassava Development Initiative is laying the foundation for one of the most ambitious agroecological and rural transformation projects in the region.

At the heart of this vision is the establishment of a 25-hectare cassava seed multiplication hub, the pilot phase of a larger 500-hectare climate-smart agricultural development platform. Designed to address food insecurity, youth unemployment, environmental degradation, and rural poverty, the initiative demonstrates how sustainable agriculture can become a powerful engine for socioeconomic development and environmental stewardship.

The project is not simply about growing cassava. It is about creating opportunities, restoring hope, strengthening communities, and building a resilient future for generations to come.

Why Cassava Matters for Food Security in Africa

Cassava is one of Africa’s most important staple crops, supporting the livelihoods and food security of hundreds of millions of people. In Cameroon and across Sub-Saharan Africa, it serves as a vital source of calories, household income, and economic activity.

However, many farmers continue to face significant challenges, including limited access to quality planting materials, declining soil fertility, climate-related production risks, low productivity, and weak value chains.

Recognizing these realities, STONEFARMS has prioritized the development of a high-quality cassava seed multiplication system capable of producing improved planting materials for future expansion and dissemination to farming communities. By starting with seed production, the organization is building the foundation for a sustainable and scalable agricultural ecosystem that can significantly improve productivity and strengthen food systems across the region.

The 25-hectare pilot phase represents the first step toward realizing a broader vision of agricultural transformation driven by innovation, sustainability, and community participation.

    A Powerful Partnership Driving Change

The progress achieved to date is the result of a strong and purposeful collaboration between STONEFARMS, WEFA SARL, and Nature Guide. This partnership demonstrates the power of collective action in addressing complex development challenges. Each organization has brought unique expertise, resources, and commitment to the initiative, contributing to planning, community engagement, technical support, site preparation, and operational coordination.

Together, these partners have worked tirelessly to transform an ambitious vision into a tangible reality. Their collaboration reflects a shared belief that sustainable development requires strong alliances capable of combining knowledge, innovation, and practical action. The journey to this stage has required resilience, determination, and a deep commitment to rural transformation. As implementation progresses, the partnership continues to serve as a model for how organizations can work together to create meaningful and lasting impact.

Overcoming the Realities of Rural Development

Large-scale agricultural development in rural Africa presents unique challenges, and the Foulong initiative has been no exception. One of the most significant obstacles encountered during the site preparation phase has been labor mobilization. Although the project is located within an agricultural community, many residents of Foulong are already engaged in their own farming activities. Others depend on hunting and related livelihood activities. Consequently, the availability of labor for large-scale land preparation has been limited.

To overcome this challenge, STONEFARMS, together with WEFA SARL and Nature Guide, expanded recruitment efforts into neighboring communities. Workers were mobilized from surrounding areas and provided with practical training to ensure that implementation activities met project standards and operational requirements.

This experience highlights an important lesson: sustainable rural development requires continuous investment in human capital, workforce development, and skills training. It also reinforces the need to create attractive employment opportunities that encourage youth participation in modern agriculture.

Investing in Human Capital: Worker and Intern Accommodation

At STONEFARMS, sustainable development begins with people. Recognizing the importance of providing adequate support for project personnel, the organization has already invested in the construction of basic on-site accommodation facilities for workers, interns, and technical staff involved in project implementation. These facilities currently provide lodging for personnel working on the development platform, reducing logistical constraints and improving operational efficiency.

As the project expands, STONEFARMS plans to modernize and significantly enhance these facilities, transforming them into a fully equipped agricultural learning and workforce support center capable of hosting interns, researchers, trainees, development practitioners, and technical experts from across Cameroon and beyond.

This investment reflects the organization’s commitment to creating an enabling environment where learning, innovation, and productivity can thrive.

    Advancing Agricultural Mechanization

Another major challenge has been limited access to agricultural mechanization. While considerable progress has been achieved through manual and semi-mechanized approaches, large-scale agricultural transformation requires greater access to modern equipment and machinery.

Mechanization will play a critical role in improving efficiency, reducing labor burdens, accelerating implementation timelines, and enhancing overall productivity. To address this need, STONEFARMS is actively pursuing new strategic partnerships and investment opportunities that will support the gradual transition toward fully mechanized operations across the development platform. By embracing modern technologies while maintaining strong agroecological principles, the organization seeks to demonstrate that productivity and sustainability can advance hand in hand.

Addressing Water Challenges and Improving Community Well-Being

Access to safe drinking water remains one of the most pressing challenges affecting both project operations and surrounding communities. Currently, project teams often travel considerable distances to neighboring areas to obtain potable water. This situation highlights a broader infrastructure gap that affects local residents and limits opportunities for improved health and development outcomes.

In response, STONEFARMS has incorporated community water access into its long-term development strategy. Future plans include the installation of boreholes that will provide reliable access to clean drinking water for workers, local residents, and future project beneficiaries. These investments are expected to improve public health, reduce the burden associated with water collection, and contribute to the overall well-being of the community. For STONEFARMS, agricultural development and human development are inseparable.

    Building Resilience in Challenging Conditions

Implementation teams have also had to navigate environmental and operational challenges, including the presence of wild flies and other field-related constraints commonly associated with large-scale agricultural activities in tropical environments. Through adaptive management, field monitoring, and continuous learning, the project team has remained committed to maintaining progress while ensuring worker safety and operational effectiveness.

These experiences underscore the resilience required to deliver meaningful development outcomes in challenging environments and reinforce STONEFARMS’ commitment to innovation and problem-solving.

Beyond Farming: A Vision for Rural Transformation

The Foulong Climate-Smart Cassava Development Initiative is designed to become far more than a cassava production project. It represents a long-term vision for integrated rural transformation, combining sustainable agriculture with environmental stewardship, economic empowerment, and human development.

Over time, STONEFARMS envisions the development of:

    • Large-scale climate-smart cassava production systems
    • High-quality seed multiplication programs
    • Organic liquid fertilizer, biopesticide, and bioherbicide production units
    • Agro-processing and value-addition facilities
    • Vocational training and agricultural innovation centers
    • Green job creation initiatives
    • Renewable energy systems
    • Community boreholes and social infrastructure
    • Environmental restoration and biodiversity conservation programs
    • Agro-tourism and environmental education platforms

This integrated model seeks to demonstrate how agriculture can drive sustainable economic growth while simultaneously protecting natural resources and improving quality of life.

A Model for Sustainable Development in Africa

The Foulong Climate-Smart Cassava Development Initiative aligns closely with global efforts to advance food security, climate action, sustainable livelihoods, and environmental conservation. Through regenerative agriculture, circular economy principles, climate resilience measures, and community-centered development approaches, STONEFARMS is building a model that can be replicated across Cameroon and other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. The initiative reflects a belief that rural communities possess enormous potential when provided with the right resources, partnerships, and opportunities.

Looking Ahead: Planting the Seeds of Transformation

Today, the 25-hectare cassava seed multiplication hub stands as a powerful symbol of progress, partnership, and possibility. While challenges remain, the foundations are being laid for a future in which agriculture serves not only as a source of food, but also as a pathway to prosperity, resilience, and sustainable development.

The seeds being planted in Foulong today will do more than produce cassava. They will generate opportunities for farmers, create jobs for youth and women, strengthen food systems, improve community well-being, and contribute to environmental restoration.

Through the leadership of STONEFARMS and the unwavering support of WEFA SARL, Nature Guide, local communities, and future partners, this initiative is helping to shape a new model of rural transformation—one that is productive, inclusive, climate-resilient, and sustainable.

At STONEFARMS, we are not merely cultivating cassava. We are cultivating opportunity, restoring ecosystems, empowering communities, and building a future where people and nature thrive together.

  • STONEFARMS MARKS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026 WITH TREE PLANTING AND COMMUNITY GREEN ACTION

STONEFARMS MARKS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026 WITH TREE PLANTING AND COMMUNITY GREEN ACTION

STONEFARMS MARKS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026 WITH TREE PLANTING AND COMMUNITY GREEN ACTION

On World Environment Day 2026, STONEFARMS proudly joined the Municipality of Dschang, community leaders, environmental advocates, youth groups, and citizens in a collective tree-planting campaign aimed at restoring ecosystems and strengthening climate resilience within the municipality.

The event, which brought together diverse stakeholders around a common environmental vision, served as a reminder that sustainable development can only be achieved when communities actively participate in protecting and restoring the natural resources upon which their future depends.

As an organization dedicated to agroecology, biodiversity conservation, environmental restoration, and community empowerment, STONEFARMS considers tree planting not simply as an environmental activity, but as a strategic investment in people, livelihoods, ecosystems, and future generations.

    From Commitment to Action

In line with the World Environment Day theme and our commitment to environmental stewardship, STONEFARMS actively participated in the municipal tree-planting exercise while simultaneously launching a community-driven initiative to encourage household and farm-level tree establishment.

Prior to the event, STONEFARMS announced a giveaway of one hundred (100) socioeconomic, agroforestry, fruit, and medicinal tree seedlings to members of the public who demonstrated interest in environmental restoration by engaging with our awareness campaign.

We are pleased to report that the commitment was fully honored.

A total of 100 seedlings were distributed to beneficiaries across the community, including:

    • Soursop (Annona muricata)
    • Mango (Mangifera indica)
    • Red Guava (Psidium guajava)
    • Bitter Cola (Garcinia kola)
    • Lime (Citrus aurantiifolia)
    • Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus)

These species were carefully selected because they combine environmental benefits with direct socioeconomic value for households.

More Than Trees: Investing in Lives

Every tree planted represents much more than vegetation.

A fruit tree can improve household nutrition, provide additional income, contribute to biodiversity conservation, improve soil health, and increase climate resilience. A medicinal plant can contribute to community health and reduce dependence on expensive pharmaceutical alternatives. An agroforestry tree can improve farm productivity, reduce erosion, conserve water, and increase long-term land value.

Assuming an average survival rate of 75–85%, the 100 seedlings distributed through this initiative could establish approximately 80 healthy trees over the coming years. These trees have the potential to directly benefit more than 300–500 individuals through improved nutrition, medicinal use, shade, environmental services, and income-generating opportunities.

    Environmental Impact Beyond Today

The environmental value of these trees extends far beyond the communities where they are planted.

Depending on species, age, and growing conditions, a mature tropical tree can absorb approximately 20–25 kilograms of carbon dioxide annually.

Based on conservative estimates, the 80 surviving trees from this initiative could collectively sequester between 1.6 and 2 metric tons of carbon dioxide every year.

Over a 20-year period, these same trees could remove more than 30–40 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Beyond carbon sequestration, these trees are expected to:

    • Improve local biodiversity by creating habitats for birds, pollinators, and beneficial organisms.
    • Reduce soil erosion and nutrient loss.
    • Improve water infiltration and watershed protection.
    • Contribute to microclimate regulation and temperature reduction.
    • Increase household access to nutritious fruits and medicinal resources.
    • Strengthen ecosystem resilience in the face of climate change.

    Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals

This initiative directly contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including: SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land).

By promoting trees that generate food, medicine, income, and ecological services, STONEFARMS demonstrates that environmental restoration and economic development are not competing priorities but mutually reinforcing objectives.

Building a Greener and More Resilient Future

At STONEFARMS, we envision landscapes where agriculture and conservation work together, where communities prosper while ecosystems recover, and where young people become leaders in climate action and environmental stewardship.

The World Environment Day activities represent only one step in a broader long-term commitment to ecosystem restoration, agroforestry development, biodiversity conservation, sustainable agriculture, environmental education, and climate-smart rural development across Cameroon.

As we continue expanding our tree nursery programs, restoration initiatives, farmer support services, and community outreach activities, we invite governments, development partners, corporations, foundations, and individuals to join us in creating lasting environmental and socioeconomic impact.

Together, we can cultivate people, restore nature, and secure the future.

Because every tree planted today is an investment in a healthier planet, stronger communities, and a more sustainable tomorrow.
