From Training to Action: STONEFARMS Follows Up on Farmer Empowerment Initiative in Santchou
At STONEFARMS, farmer empowerment goes beyond sharing knowledge. It is about accompanying farmers from learning to experimentation, from experimentation to adoption, and ultimately toward greater independence and resilience.
As part of our ongoing farmer empowerment initiative in Santchou, the STONEFARMS team conducted a follow-up visit last weekend to assess progress, engage with farmers, and continue the practical work initiated during our previous intervention. The follow-up provided an opportunity to reconnect with farmers, review the progress of the activities introduced during the first phase, and strengthen the practical understanding of sustainable agricultural practices.
Turning Local Resources into Agricultural Solutions
One of the most important components of the initiative has been the preparation of a locally produced organic fertilizer designed to provide farmers with an affordable and accessible alternative to dependence on costly external inputs. The fertilizer preparation is progressing well and is now approaching maturity. In approximately three weeks, the prepared fertilizer will be ready for distribution and use by participating farmers.
Following our initial preparation, the formulation was further enriched with several locally available materials. Among the additional materials incorporated were ground eggshells and snail shells, which contribute mineral components to the preparation. Rabbit urine was also incorporated as part of the nutrient-rich organic inputs.
The team further introduced white stone and biochar, with biochar serving an important role in the preparation, particularly in helping to absorb and retain impurities while contributing to the overall quality of the final product. These additions reflect the STONEFARMS approach of exploring the potential of resources that are often overlooked or discarded and transforming them into useful agricultural inputs.
More Than a Product: Building Farmer Capacity
The objective is not simply to deliver fertilizer to farmers. The larger goal is to help farmers understand how agricultural inputs can be produced from locally accessible resources, while encouraging responsible resource management, soil health, and more sustainable production systems.
By involving farmers in the process, STONEFARMS seeks to create knowledge that remains within the community. This approach can contribute to reducing input costs, improving farmers’ confidence in locally developed solutions, and encouraging greater ownership of agricultural practices.
Follow-Up Is Where Empowerment Becomes Real
The Santchou initiative demonstrates an important principle of our work: farmer empowerment does not end when a training session ends. Follow-up allows technical knowledge to be tested, improved, adapted, and translated into practical results. The latest visit therefore represents another step in a longer process—one that connects training, local innovation, input production, field application, observation, and continuous learning.
In approximately three weeks, the next milestone will be reached when the prepared fertilizer is distributed to the farmers for application and observation. STONEFARMS will continue accompanying the initiative as farmers begin using the product, documenting their experience and learning from the results.
